Anafi: The island of the Argonauts

Anafi, the shelter of the Argonauts. A small paradise. Located 12 miles east of the island Santorini. It is a mountainous, barren island.
The characteristic of Anafi is its shape, which is like a cone because of mountain Kalamos and the disproportionate height. The mountain is located in the center of the island.
Anafi has endless beauty and authentic Cycladic style. Perhaps the beauty of the island is due to the miracle, according to the legend, of emergency rise from the depths of the Aegean for the protection of the Argonauts from a storm. One could say that it looks like the garden of Eden.
The island is composed of a single settlement, Chora. There is only one paved road on the island, which starts from the port of Agios Nikolaos. The town is built on the hill and has a distinctive appearance thanks to the domes of the houses and their architecture.

A tour in the little paradise

The island might be small, but there are several attractions that worth  visiting.
The tour of the island can be launched from the Archaeological Museum, continued by the beautiful cobblestone streets of the island, the Castle and the old windmills, in Chora.

The tourists can visit the monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa, dating from 16th century. Associated with legends and traditions of the region that will excite the imagination of visitors. Finally, in the area of Castelli is located the monastery of Our Lady of Dokaris, a place which has much interest.

Beaches: Beaches made of gold

The beaches on the south side of Anafi are sandy and leeward, thats why the tourists prefer them more. Starting from the port, the visitors can find the beaches of Anafi in an order: Klissidi, Katsouni, Megalos and Mikros Roukounas, Kalimatsa, Megalo Potami and Monastery. The beaches that get more remoted from Chora, are more deserted making them an ideal place for those seeking tranquility, while they dive and relax under the beautiful sun. The beaches can be reached on foot or by boat, leaving the tourists to the beach they have choosed.The boat receives the visitors and take them back to Chora in specificated time.

Entertainment

In the center of Anafi the visitors can find beautiful, quaint taverns to enjoy the traditional dishes of the island. There are few bars that will surely enrich the summer nights of tourists. In Klissidi there are also restaurants and bars that will satisfy visitors.

Events

The most important feast of the island, with strong local style, is the one of Our Lady on September 8 at the monastery Kalamiotissa. In this festival except from the tourists and the locals, visitors come from Santorini and neighboring islands.

Local Products

There are some local delicacies that all visitors should try.It is the braised rabbit or stew and the delicious local honey. The local goat cheese has special flavor and the lobster spaggeti with fresh lobster, will enchant the palates of those who will try.

Internal Transport

In the island you will see moving only agricultural vehicles.The most of the  island’s travels are made on foot,  with animals and boats in the coastal areas.

How to get there

Visitors can reach the beautiful Anafi by ferry from Piraeus lasting 9 to 10 hours. Routes take place throughout the year. By hydrofoil the travellers can go from a Anafi to Ios, Paros, Naxos, Syros, Tinos, Mykonos.
