Sikinos
Sikinos, the magic of the unworldly
This is a peaceful island of Southern Cyclades, between Ios and Folegandros, which does not consist a tourist destination for many, but for those few who want to experience the magic of the unworldly between “warm” people.
It was named after the son of the legendary king of Lemnos Thoa, Sikinos, while in ancient times it was called Enoe thanks to its countless vineyards.
If you desire peace and relaxation, Sikinos will surely amaze you.
Chora or Chorio
Chora is located 3.5 km from the port, is built on the edge of the cliff and is one of the most beautiful of the Cyclades.
The traditional whitewashed houses built cheek by jowl with one another as a way of protecting their people from the raiders of the past.
At Chora it’s worth spending time to visit the white church Pantanassa that was founded in 1787, and it is said that the picture is miraculous.
Thereafter, you can admire the Monastery of the Life Giving Fountain at the edge of the rock, which served as a refuge for the residents from the pirates, the Folklore Museum and the Windmills at the highest point of the town.
Just outside Chora, at about 1 km, where was once the ancient Sikinos built by Ionian residents, is now Episkopi with the Church of the Assumption of the 5th century. A little further of Episkopi, in the area of St. Marina, you may see the ancient settlements.
Maybe the village can not offer a lively nightlife, but the square will await you with welcoming people with warm smiles and interesting stories to tell, and in the evening if you want a drink, there are some bar working.
During the year, there are three big festivals in the region in a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere. One is on the 15th of August in celebration of the Life Giving Fountain, of Virgin Mary on November 21 and the feast of Our Lady of Pantanassa on March 27.
Tip: You should definitely try the salad with capers and beans, the sour milk and sesame and accompany your meal with a sweet Sikinian wine.
On the festive days you will have the opportunity to taste goat stuffed with pine nuts.
Alopronia or Ano Pronia
