Chalki: a retreat “mansion”

This small island is located in the west of Rhodes and is one of the smallest  islands of the Dodecanese. It is the ideal destination for those who avoid the busy and fashionable resorts and prefer the quiet, scenic places where the traditional way of life holds even today. Note that  during the recent years, Chalki has proclaimed "center of peace and friendship." Young people around the world visit the island each summer, and organize cultural events. Regarding the name, the prevailing view is that is owed  at  the processing copper mine that lived there in antiquity.

Historical data about the past of Halki is very few. Excavations show that the island has flourished from the 10th to the fifth century BC. Since the late Classical period until the 13th century  that made their appearance, the Venetians, Chalki was like there was not even on the map. Generally, the island was in the shadow of Rhodes, in 1522 was occupied by the Turks until 1912 that came Italians. Incorporated  with Greece in 1948.

Port and capital of Halki is Nimborio. A beautiful traditional village - the only inhabited the island-that  impresses the visitor due to its manorial appearance. The tour on this small island will fill you with mixed feelings. One the one side, you will admire the Italian-architecture style houses, built amphitheater at the foot of the hill that create a picture of an aristocratic profile. You will also admire the Byzantine monasteries and picturesque churches but  on the other side you will strongly  have the feeling of melancholy for the ramshackle villages and especially the abandoned village, the ancient capital of Chalki.

Worth to see the church of Agios Nikolas, the neoclassical mansion of the Town Hall, the chapel of Taksiarchis Michail, and the Monastery of Ai-Giannis Alarga.

The beaches of Chalki will enchant you with their crystal clear waters. The closest beach is the Pontamou. In the south you'll find more secluded beaches where access is by boat. On the north side of the island will find the beaches Sarri, Kania and Dio Giali. If you have more appetite for exploring the area, worth visiting the island Alimia which is  located between Halki and  Skala Kameirou of Rhodes.

Picturesque taverns, traditional coffee shops and cafes are available along the beach. Do not miss the big traditional feast on August 29 at the Monastery of Ai-Giannis Alarga!
