Welcome to the island of the Apocalypse

In this island of Dodecanese, so much the beauty, as the intense element of religiosity, you will be charmed, around a climate of a spiritual contrition. The island of Patmos is the centre of orthodoxy. There, Saint John the Theologian, envisioned and wrote the Apocalypse, the last and more important capital of Bible.

In Chora, is found the Monastery of Saint John of Theologian. Westwards of the Monastery, anyone can find the districts, Allotina, Laoyra, Nioxori, Lotzia, Kilimoyntra, Maggoyri, while easterly the districts, Foyrnoi, Lakkakia, Ghrokomiou, the Cretans, Prodromos, Mylous.

While in older centuries the place of Scalas, accepted very often attacks from pirates, in the current century this region constitutes one from the more important commercial and shipping centers.

In Scala, are found all the commercial shops, the travel agencies, the banks, the Custom, the Port Authority, a lot of restaurants and taverns.

In the big gulf of Scala, a department is occupied by the port of the island, with his wide jetty and with a excellent beach outside from the port, while in the western side of the city is found the open and rocky gulf of Hohlaka with very clean beach.

Grikos is a small seasonal settlement. Has quiet, no a wide beach, clean sea and one small mole. Moreover, in Grikos are very good taverns with variety of Dodecanese foods, hotels and rented rooms. Near in the place of Grikos, is found one of the busy beaches the Psili Ammos and the beach Diakofti. These two beaches are from more beautiful of the island and you can reach in them roadly but also with small sail boats that travel around the island.

Walking more southerly we meet the Rock of Kallikatsoys and the place of Stone. The beach of Stone is organized with umbrellas made of straw, wooden lyings and canteen.

In the northern department of island, the region of Campos and particularly the Down Campos is famous for his excellent beach, which all the visitors of the island visit. The sea is shallow, heat, ideal for each family. Similar beach we also meet in the Agriolivado, that apart from the beach anyone can enjoy various sports. In left the place of Agriolivado, exist small, graphic gulves that are approached with boat or with canoe. The Saint Thekla is a small island opposite from the gulf that took his name from the little church that is found there. There, is a beach that somebody can reach by rowing.

More north is found the place of Lampis, which took her name from the beams of sun that reflect above in the stones and water. This beach is famous for her colorfully infrequent pebbles. Many people go there not only for a pleasant stay, but also to collect such pebbles. Moreover in the place exist ruins of ancient settlement Platis Gialos.

 

Local dishes

In all the islands of Greece, main dish is the fresh fish. So in Patmos you can enjoy fish in graphic taverns of the island. Do not omit to taste the traditional cheese pie of island and the sweet named "poygi'" for which Patmos is famous.

 

How to get there

From the port of Piraeus the island of Patmos abstains 10 hours. Each summertime are executed more itineraries so that they serve the people that goes for vacations to the popular islands.
