Evia
Evia is the second bigger island of Greece after the island of Crete. The main entry for Evia is via the bridge of Chalcida, which is the capital of the island.
With this name the island is reported for the first time by the Homer. In the ancient years they were considered as a place suitable for pasturage of oxen and from this fact resulted also its name or at another version it comes from the name of Asopos’ daughter, Evia.
Its development in the years that followed the season of Ottoman domination, it is progressive and fast, because it is found near the capital of our country. The aspect of island is continuously altered with the growth, the tourist movement and its commercial activity.
Evia hides a lot of beauties for the lovers of nature. Because of its size it combines a lot of different landscapes. Its northern part has a lot of green and of course it is influenced from Sporades, with big beaches that are revealed through the slopes with the pine trees as a surprise. Peuki, Rovies, Aidipsos, Artemisio, the lake Evia and Saint Anna are for sure some of the regions that combine wonderfully the mountain and the sea. Aidipsos is very famous for its baths and all the adorers of this type are about to visit it. A characteristic point of Northern Evia is Lichadonisia, the small islets opposite from Lichada that it is ideal for a pleasant excursion with boats in some of the most beautifully spotless waters, where the trees reach up to the sea. Its southern part, on the contrary, is more naked and he reminds us of the islands of Aegean, without of course missing the monuments and the beautiful beaches. Southern Evia from Kavo Ntoro up to the waves of the Aegean seas is a lighthouse. Splendid, unique, uncharted, distant, it is waiting for you to discover it. The mountainous landscapes with the air of the Aegean sea compose the graphic settlement of Karysto which is constituted by the one end until the other by virgin shores with blue waters and golden sand. Karystos is one of the most important fisheries in Greece. The local cooking and local products have dominating place in the choices of visitors. Do not forget to try the traditional koyrkoympines, (small pieces from dough that is boiled and burned in goat butter or oil), a dish which you can find in the menu of all restaurants. Diving, walking, surfing, jet ski, cycling, riding are some of the activities that you can do in Karysto. In southern Evia, however, you will meet also other regions with exceptional interest as Styra, Marmari, Amygdalia and Krieza.
In central Evia you will meet the famous beach of Chiliadou, the location where slopes of Dirfis meet the sea, you will be revived and you will enjoy the nature. There is also the unique beach of Limniona that in the last years has grown essential tourist growth. The spotless waters of this beach will enchant you, and also you will find taverns with very good food.
The access in Evia is very easy and you can go by car via the existing road network. The best way for exploring it, it is to allocate yours own transport means, and surely it deserves that you visit also parts in which the local transport or the organised excursions don’t reach. Evia is also an ideal destination for those who may want to be in a narrower contact with the nature and enjoy the alternative tourism as these places are advisable for camping. Moreover there are many travelers that visit different point of Evia each year, the choices are really many. Visit Evia and you will not regret it.
