Agios Efstratios
Agios Efstratios is a small island that will enchant every visitor. Located in the center of the Aegean Sea, between Lemnos, Skyros and Lesbos. Saint Efstratios fled on the island and found refuge in a cave called “Ai-Stration”. Administratively, the island belongs to Lemnos, its shape is triangular and has an area 49 sq.chlm.
The only settlement on the island is Agios Efstratios, with 250 residents. There is the port of the island at the northwestern coast. The houses that tourists will see in the village are well-groomed and surrounded by lots of fruit trees.
Beaches
The tourists on the island can swim not only in the beach of the village, they can visit by boat the beaches of Agios Dimitrios, Trygaki, Lidario, Ftylio. On the north side of the island there are the beaches Maroulia, Panagia and Kalami.
Apart from the sandy beaches, tourists have the opportunity to go round of the island exploring the Mediterranean part of Agios Efstratios. There are many caves that can be visited by tourists, which are the home of Mediterranean seals.
Entertainment
Agios Efstratios, like all the Greek islands is famous for its fresh fish and lovely tavernas. Furthermore, guests can relax and drink their coffee at the traditional cafes. Regarding the events of the island, a big traditional island feast is on 15th August, the feast of the Virgin Mary. In this grand celebration, visitors will have the opportunity to experience the customs of the island and have fun in greek pace. During Christmas day all the inhabitants of the island, are cooking braised lamb, a traditional food of the island. All this, is an experience that will stay in the mind of every visitor.
Local Products
The island is famous for the delicious beans, which all visitors must taste. Also, dairy products produced on the island, deserve to be experienced by the tourists and have a little taste of Greek cuisine and delicacies.
Internal Transport
On the island there are no cars, that’s why the transportation of the tourists are is made on foot, by animals or by boat. Anyone who owns a boat can tie it up at the port of Agios Efstratios.
How to get there
Travelers who want to reach this small but beautiful island, can travel by boat launching from Rafina and in 12 hours will have reached their destination. Ferries run year-round. In Rafina the tourists can go by bus.
