Oinousses
Oinousses is part of a cluster of islands between Chios and the Asia Minor peninsula, Erithrea. Oinousses have only one island inhabitable, Oinoussa, from where the cluster got its name. The other islands of the cluster are Panagia, Vatos, Pontikoniso, Avloni, Archontoniso and the twin islands full of green and their lighthouse, Prassonisia.
Oinoussa is known for its wine, which has its name. The main features of the island is a bronze mermaid that greets the visitors to the port, the small stone houses, the mansions that ascends on the south side of the island and the natural coves with the clear waters. The residents of Oinoussa are shipowners and return each summer to their home country giving life to the island.
A tour of the island
Those who choosed the island for their vacations, worth visiting the Naval Museum, which reflects the great maritime tradition. Also, considerable interest gathers the Monastery of the Annunciation, with interesting paintings by Fotis Kontoglou and many relics. The Monastery of the Virgin Mary celebrates its feast based on the old calendar, on August 28th. The Cathedral of St. Nicolas is a place that has many visitors. In the church is kept the piece of the sacred relics of the Saint and many believers come to make a votive offering to the Saint.
Beaches
Oinoussa has several beaches where the tourists can relax and sunbathe under the warm Greek sun. In particular, tourists can swim in small coves with beaches covered with pebble like Castle, Farkero, Bilalis and Chatziali. Near the port the holidaymakers will find the beach Zepaga. By boat, tourists can do the round of the island and visit the nearby deserted islands that each one has its own unique beauty.
Entertainment
The island has many restaurants and cafes where the visitors can have fun and relax.As for the festivities that take place in Oinousses, a big feast is on f St. George’s day. In the Stadium-auditorium, are held every year several theatrical performances, sporting events, musical evenings, exhibitions and many other events where guests can have fun and learn the customs of the island and Greece in general.
On the island are many traditional festivals with local island bands. On August 15th at Oinoussa is taking place the custom of burial of Virgin Mary. Furthermore, big festivals are held at the beautiful churches of St. George and St. Irene. The biggest celebration takes place on December 6, involving the Navy, the Coast Guard and the army. A sight that will impress all visitors and will never forget.
Local Products
At the market of the island the tourists will find many items that can take as a memento from Oinousses. At the convent of the Annunciation they will find hand-woven and fine wine. The visitors of the island can not leave without trying the delicious pie of the island and the “bourelikia” filled with a variety of wild grasses. Dishes flavored by Greece.
Internal Transport
On Oinoussa island the tourists can be transpotred with animals, boats or on foot. However, there are some agricultural vehicles that can serve the tourists in the island.
How to get there
The passage at the cluster of the islands and particularly in Oinoussa, can be made only through Chios island.
