Psara
At Psara go as a pilgrim...
Psara is the only island, in the cluster to which it belongs, which is inhabited.
At Homer the island is referred as Psyrii, and there have been found traces of Mycenaean settlement and tombs of the 13th century. BC
The History of Psara is directly related to the Greek Revolution of 1821, as his contribution to the Struggle was decisive. Besides, along with Spetses and Hydra, Psara were among the first islands that rose up against the Turks conquerors.
The fleet of Psara with the courageous captains Kanaris, Papanikolis and Pipinos caused significant disruption to the Turks,who decided to wipe out the island and managed it by the renowned Holocaust of 1824, where after a long trial, the Turks preponderated, while the islanders who had the time, left, and the others chose to die by blowing up the powder kegs on the island.
Today, the island while keeping its historic glory offers peace and serenity through a pleasant natural environment and culinary delights through the pure products of the land and sea.
Psara
Amphitheater in the cove of the bay Limen is the only settlement on the island. Characteristics of the area are, the Lighthouse in transition between Chios and Psara, the beautiful beaches that surround the island and the unique architecture of the houses.
Located on the island it’s worth making a tour of the monastery of Virgin Mary which in church documents is classified as “Stavropigio”. Then you can visit the House of congressman Konstantinos Kanaris, the “Palaiokastro” built by the Venetians in the 15th century, and the historic church of St. Nicholas.
So, after you have made your walk, you can cool off at the beaches Kato Gialos, Katsouni and a little further from the village in Lazorema, Lakka and Lemnos.
There are traditional tavernas and cafes to try the thyme honey or the cheese “mizithra”, of which Psara are known.
On June 22 is celebrated the anniversary of the Holocaust of Psara.

Through Chios, by ferry from Piraeus.
