Salamis
My soul went… to Koulouri!
Located 45 minutes by boat from Piraeus, and a fourth by ferry boat from Perama, Salamis is considered more like a suburb of Piraeus than a separate island. However, most Athenians visit her often when they desire an escape from the routine of the city.
There’s none who doesn’t know Salamis, even from history where she became known for the victorious battle in favor of the Greeks against the Persians, which took place in the narrow pass between her and Perama.
Beautiful beaches in the south and west, a 24hour transport and near distance from the center of Piraeus, are some of the reasons that make Koulouri one of the most famous destinations for holidaymakers.
Salamis or Koulouri
It is the capital of the island, numbering around 20,000 residents and in recent years it has greatly developed.
During the summer months, if you’d like to cool, you may prefer the southwestern beaches of the island.
Besides the nightlife which includes bars, clubs and bouzoukia, you can also watch very interesting events, no matter which season you’ll go. The Municipality of Salamis organizes the penultimate and last Sunday of Carnival,a great party offering the world a lot of wine and the traditional “galaktoboureko”. A little later, on April or May, “Karaiskakia” are organized,a 3-day cultural and sporting event. In addition, you can have fun to the Festival of the Fisherman with plenty of wine and fish treated from the Municipality, but also at the Municipality of Salamis Festival. Finally,a large feast takes place on 23-25 August at the monastery of Virgin Mary Revealed.
Attractions: There is special interest at the historical monastery of Our Lady Revealed (6 km west of town). You can also visit the House of Hospitality of Aggelos Sikelianos, the archeological museum, the folklore museum and library, the stone theater in Selinia and the windmills on the hill of St.Nikolaos.
Something that is not to be missed is the Tomb of the Salaminomachon in Cynosure, the Euripidean Theater and the Cave of Eurupides-Dionysus Sanctuary near Peristeria.
SOS: Try at least the traditional “platetsi” and “kougkoulouari” and buy a doll with gold-embroidered costume as a souvenir.
Abelakia
Just 4km from Koulouri, lies the the port on ancient Salamis, with some of the relics of the ancients plants to “decorate” the seabed.
A little south from the area of Abelakia, took place the famous battle.
In this area, there were found remnants of the Mycenaean settlement and Sanctuary. If you are there, visit the ruins of the historic city of “Kolouris”.
At Abelakia and Selinia, you mau find taverns, cafes and restaurants to spend your time pleasantly.
Aiantio or Moulki or Nato
A little further away from the island’s capital, a distance of 6 km, we can find the “pined” Aiantio, the most “green” area of Salamis.
This is the most important tourist resort of the island, especially in summer, thanks mainly to its beaches, but also due to the fact that the coastal road is full of cafes operating since morning and those can offer you a combination of tasteful coffee and diving in the cool water of the central coast.
You may also swim at the beaches Iliakti, Kanakia, Kolones and Peristeria.
Attractions: Visit the historic monastery of St. Nikolaos in the area Lemonia and of course the location Kolones.
