Spetses, the great and proud island of the Saronic Gulf. The homeland of Bouboulina and a place which played a key role in the Greek Revolution in 1821. The hills are full of pines, which  explains tha ancient name of island Pitiousa. It was also called and fragrant island, because of the many herbs that grows all over tha island.

The trademark of the island are the the beautiful neoclassical buildings, the “jewel” of Spetses. Facing the port and the capital of the island the visitors can see a number of memorials highlights, that indentify the cultur of the island. This area, is characterized as preserved.

The statue of Bouboulina on the right side of the harbor, stands impressive, overlooking the blue sea and the mansions along the beach give to Spetses a unique charm. 

Tour of the island: A place with historical importance

Square Dapia is one of the most known place in Spetses, located in the center of the capital. There can be seen the guns of the Revolution of 1821.

SpetsesOne of the first stop of the visitor’s tour, is the home and the private museum of Laskarina Bouboulina. There you can see from up close the personal belongings of the heroine and mentally wander in the paths of her life.

The Museum of Spetses guides the visitors to the events of the Revolution, through the relics and original letters from Theodore Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diacos. It is housed in the mansion of Hatzigiannis Mexi.

On the coastal road is built the church of Panagia Armata, commemorating the great naval battle of Spetses against the Turks.

Also worth visiting the Cathedral of Spetses, which is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the Church of the Holy Trinity, built in the highest point of the island, offering stunning view to the travelers, and the Kapodistrian Club where you can find a remarkable library.

Finally, many tourists visit the cave Bekir, the famous mansions and the Possidonio Square, where there is the famous statue of Bouboulina.

 

Beaches: Live paintings

Spetses have many beaches that can satisfy all tastes. The feature of the island’s beaches is the Spetsesgolden sand and the smooth pebbles. The visitors can swim both in the city’s beaches and in the bays of the island.There are organized beaches as Xylokeriza, Agios Nicolaos, Agios Mammas, Kounoupitsa and Sxoles.

However, visitors who want to relax and enjoy the sun and sea without trouble, can swim in secluded coves such as Vrellos, Ligoneri and Bithistamna. These beaches, can be accessed by motorbike or bicycle. Another alternative for those who want to visit every corner of Spetses, are the boats that launched each morning by the harbor, making the tour of the island so as visitors can swim at any beach they want.

Also, the tourists can enjoy the beautiful waters by doing varius sports such as windsurfing and water skiing on the beach of Saint Anargyroi.
