Skyros: the island of culture

This beautiful island with special morphology is the southernmost of Greece. Renowned for its many natural beauties and the traditional customs that come even from ancient times. The inhabitants of the island go against the tide and maintain their customs and occupations.

They often say the first impression is the most important then you will Skyros will amaze you. The town of Skyros, otherwise Chora, as the locals call it, a city as picturesque and friendly to visitors that will leave you unforgettable memories. Like so many islands this site is built in such a way as to protect residents from pirate attacks.

Walk in the Capital of... arts

As a first ride and getting to know the island worths a tour in the town. What will impress you most is the architecture of the houses. White houses stuck together to form a kind of wall. In the streets you will find many shopping stores, although it is impressive the number of workshops woodcarving, pottery, textiles and art of Skyros since crafts are highly honoured in this unique island.
The town of Skyros has many important monuments and places of tourist interest. The Byzantine fortress is the first that you should focus your attention. Dominates over the hill and so far the remains of the castle walls.

Then you will visit the Diocese and the monastery of St. George which was created by Nicephorus Phocas and John Tsimiski in 906. While wondering you will find countless churches and larger churches are indeed distinguished by their exceptional painting and calm ambiance.
Skyros is keen on all forms of art not only the manual. Very famous is the statue of the Eternal Poetry dedicated to the English poet Rupert Brooke, known for his romantic and patriotic poetry and special character of the island as inspired by the patriotic ideals. Beyond the statue, many people and attract his grave in the same position or Boukes or Tristomo at the southeast coast of the island.

Turning back to the country will find the Archaeological Museum, which exhibits ceramic vases and pots, jewelry and ancient coins, household items and tools, many of which have been found in archaeological site Palamari. Also even more interesting is the special area which is represented inside a Skyrian house. Famous and connected to the culture of Skyros is the museum Faltaits, one of the first folk museums in Greece, which display many items of everyday life of Skyros antique, rare embroideries and ceramics traditional art and artwork of famous sculptures and paintings of Manos Faltaits.

Where to swim

After the first acquaintance with the island it was time to see the natural beauty and great beaches with their unique beauty,

I suggest you start from Magazia, a pretty village which gathers many people every summer. A little far away you will find Molos. These areas are both located close to town and have large and sandy beaches with golden sand and crystal clear waters. Ideal place to relax. At the same time these settlements include all sorts of business to make your stay more pleasant. Lodgings, restaurants and bars promise to give you beautiful moments.
Gyrismata is also a popular beach of Skyros with sandy land. The beach is wide and attracts many tourists during summer. Those who prefer solitude could address the pine-covered beaches of Kyra Panagia and Atsitsa while a dip in the Pine and Kalamitsa will renew you mentally. Finally, another option is Gialos. Keep in mind that here Achilles took his bath.
Overall, the island is rounded of wonderful beaches that adorn the entire island. Here are Nifi, Three Boukes, Fanari and Diapori.

Caves

Take advantage of the days with calm seas and visit the caves where they are on the steep peaks of Mt Koxili, otherwise, the highest mountain in the island. The Caves are six and can be reached by boat, but worth the effort because beauty is associated with the serenity of the iridescent water.
